Both matches took place at Dreher High School in Columbia, and the atmosphere was electric!
The Rock Hill girls wrestling team faced off against Greenwood and managed to clinch the title with a score of 46-36. This victory marks a significant milestone as it is the first time a dual-team championship was held for girls wrestling in South Carolina. The competition featured a 16-team bracket, showcasing the growing enthusiasm and talent in the sport.
In addition to the team’s win, several individual wrestlers from Rock Hill showed off their skills and determination during the matches. Some notable performances came from:
Rock Hill has been building its wrestling program steadily, having previously won individual team titles for two consecutive seasons. With the growth of girls wrestling in South Carolina, there were 637 girls competing this season. This increase is attributed to the sport being officially sanctioned by the South Carolina High School League three years ago, and coaches are hopeful about the potential for further expansion in the future.
On the boys’ side, Chester’s wrestling team showcased incredible prowess as they defeated Buford with an impressive score of 65-17. This victory marked the first state title in the program’s history. With a fantastic season record of 34-4, the Cyclones demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the postseason.
Chester’s journey to the title included remarkable wins against some tough opponents, including the defending champion Chesnee and the top-ranked Liberty in earlier playoff rounds. Their strong performance resulted in multiple matches won by pin, showcasing their dominance on the mat and solidifying their status as champions.
The successful championship events highlight the increasing popularity of wrestling, especially for girls, as seen in the 16-team bracket. Coaches have noted that over 64,000 girls are participating in wrestling across the United States, which reflects a growing trend and interest that bodes well for the sport’s future. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by both Rock Hill and Chester’s teams emphasize the hard work that goes into achieving these remarkable wins.
As this wrestling season comes to a close, both teams have made their mark in South Carolina’s sports history.
