Rock Hill College Launches Career Closet to Help Students Dress for Success
In the heart of Rock Hill, a local college is making strides not just by handing out degrees but by equipping students with the tools they need to thrive in the job market. York Technical College has launched an inspiring initiative known as the Career Closet, which provides students with professional clothing at absolutely no cost. This innovative project has helped around 100 students since it kicked off back in April.
A Place for Professional Attire
The Career Closet, now operating from its new home in the Wolf’s Den, offers a wide variety of clothing to meet students’ needs. From business suits and ties to blouses, slacks, and jackets, the items are generously donated by faculty, staff, and members of the community, ensuring that students have access to attire that helps them put their best foot forward.
According to Nikita Baxter, the director of student life, the motivation behind this initiative stemmed from a clear need among students. “Our students continue to need this service,” she commented. What started as a “pop-up” shop during a career fair has now become a permanent opportunity. “By developing the Wolf’s Den, we made this a part of it so students can come in and get clothes, not just during career fair time,” Baxter added.
The Wolf’s Den: A Hub for Support
The Wolf’s Den, named after the college’s new mascot, the Titan, opened its doors with a mission to provide support beyond just clothing. In addition to the Career Closet, the facility includes a food pantry that aims to help meet students’ nutritional needs. The idea is to create a welcoming environment for students to access resources that can alleviate some of the stress associated with being in school.
Baxter also highlighted the overwhelming community support that has made the Career Closet possible. “We still have an abundance that we don’t even have room for,” she explained. This surplus is a positive challenge, allowing the team to ensure that the clothes offered are not only in good shape but also reflect the current seasonal trends, catering to a variety of professional settings.
Access for All
Students and alumni are welcome to take home at least two outfits, which can be a game-changer for someone heading to an interview or a networking event. Alongside their wardrobe, they can also utilize the food pantry by visiting twice a month to collect essential items. This approach helps create a safety net for students at various stages of their educational journey.
