Rock Hill Community Rallies for Justice Three Years After Tragic Shooting

ROCK HILL, S.C. — It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since Alexis Massey was taken far too soon by a senseless act of violence. On the heels of shocking news and lingering heartbreak, Alexis’ sister, Trekeisha McMullen, is stepping forward to keep her sister’s memory alive while seeking justice for her untimely death.

On Mother’s Day in 2021, Trekeisha fondly remembers sharing a beautiful moment with her little sister, patting her back and telling her how lovely she looked. “This is the last memory I have of my sister,” Trekeisha shared. “I was rubbing her back saying, ‘Girl, you’re so beautiful, you’re so pretty, I love you, girl.’ And that always plays in my head.” Sadly, the very next day, that joyful essence of life was cut short.

Just an Innocent Bystander

The joy turned to agony when Alexis was at a gathering on Hagins Street, and gunfire rang out nearby. Police reports indicate that Alexis was struck by a stray bullet and died instantly. Detective Matt Beach of the Rock Hill Police Department revealed that while the shooting might be tied to gang activity, Alexis was never involved. “She was just hanging out with some friends… she was in the wrong place and was struck,” Beach explained.

It’s devastating to think that a young woman out enjoying time with friends could so easily become a tragic statistic. Trekeisha believes there are many out there who may have information about the shooting but are hesitant to come forward. “People been talking, but it’s like they’re scared to say anything and they don’t want to be a snitch,” she said. “But it’s like what if this was your family? Y’all don’t know what we’re going through, still to this day.”

A Community in Pain

Detective Beach emphasized the emotional toll this case has taken on him, stating, “I know they’re hurting and I feel that this is one of those cases where I, personally, have lost sleep over it.” The detectives have gathered copious amounts of evidence but still need that crucial tip to move the case forward. “What you bring to the table may not seem relevant, but when we put it into the puzzle, it may make the whole picture just pop out,” he added.

Trekeisha is fervently urging anyone with information to share it. “I just want someone to say something, please, ‘cause I know somebody knows something,” she pleaded. To encourage this, a $5,000 reward is currently being offered for any information leading to an arrest. The best part is that all tips can remain anonymous, allowing those with information to come forward without fear.

Remembering Alexis and Rallying the Community

As part of a community effort to raise awareness about gun violence and honor Alexis’ memory, the pastor at the Sanctuary of Life Outreach Center has called upon locals to wear black this coming Sunday. This simple act is intended as a visual show of support for those affected by similar tragedies. The pastor hopes that it will unite the community and spark conversations about the impact of gun violence.

The heart-wrenching pain of losing a loved one to violence is something no family should ever have to endure. If you or anyone you know has information surrounding the shooting that claimed Alexis’ life, reaching out to the Rock Hill Police Department could help bring justice to a family that desperately needs it. Together, the community can work towards ensuring such tragedies are not forgotten and find ways to stop them from happening in the future.
