ROCK HILL, S.C. — As many folks in the Rock Hill community rally to send aid to those in the mountains battling the aftermath of Helene, an inspiring local group is stepping up to support both the heroes on the front lines and those receiving life-saving aid. Under the leadership of Amanda Riggan, Hungry Heroes is turning the overwhelming devastation caused by the storm into a feast of hope and comfort for those who need it most.
Amanda found her motivation to serve in Western North Carolina not just from seeing the heartbreak on the news but also from a deeply personal reaction to the destruction that Helene left in her wake. “I’ve never in my life seen anything like that,” Riggan confessed, recalling her experience in the High Country post-storm. “I’ve done a lot of mission work overseas, but this one hurt.” Her emotions transformed into determination, fueling a mission to provide hot meals and warm hearts.
The team at Hungry Heroes is taking a proactive approach to serve the community. With the temperature dropping as winter approaches, they’ve transitioned their menu to include chilis and soups—comfort food that can put a smile on anyone’s face. “We’ve done everything from hot dogs and hamburgers to fried bologna sandwiches,” shared Riggan. “As long as the donations keep coming in, we are committed to feeding those in need.”
The origins of Hungry Heroes date back to the tragic ambush on law enforcement in 2018 that took the life of York County detective Mike Doty. What began as a mission to support military personnel and first responders in their time of need has now evolved into a vital resource for the entire community whenever disaster strikes. Riggan emphasizes the current situation in North Carolina as an urgent call to action. “There’s definitely a need right now,” she stated, firmly committed to seeing everyone who is hungry receive a meal.
What makes this initiative so uplifting is the community spirit it embodies. Riggan noted a diverse range of individuals coming through their food lines. “I never know who’s going to come through the line,” she said. “We’ve had residents, linemen, dispatchers, and even homeless people… just to see that, hey, we care and here’s a hot meal. I hope it changes their lives as well.”
As people come together to offer assistance, Riggan wants everyone to recognize the significance of even the smallest gestures. She encourages everyone to understand that “there are no small gestures and there’s no lack of compassion for neighbors in need.” She reassures those who think their contributions might not make a difference: “People think my one loaf of bread or my socks probably aren’t helping. It absolutely is. It is all they have.” Every little bit counts when it comes to making a difference in someone’s life, especially after such a devastating event.
Want to help? Riggan encourages the public to join in this heartwarming effort. By visiting the organization’s website, those inspired by the efforts of Hungry Heroes can learn how to contribute, whether through food donations or financial support. “It’s devastating out there,” she said. “But together, we can make a real impact.”
In these challenging times, it’s clear that the power of community support shines brighter than ever. With groups like Hungry Heroes leading the way, hope continues to flourish in Rock Hill and beyond.
