Winthrop University’s baseball team faced a tough challenge in their first game of a three-game home series against USC Upstate, ultimately falling short with a final score of 5-2. The Eagles now stand at 12-15-1 overall and 4-3 in the Big South conference.
Charlie Evans played a significant role for Winthrop, going 1-4 with 1 run, 2 RBIs, and 1 home run. On the pitching side, Noah Sullivan secured the win for USC Upstate, improving to 7-1, while Riley Huge took the loss for Winthrop with a 4-3 record. Jake Cubbler earned the save, his second of the season.
In the third inning, Charlie Evans’ two-run homer put Winthrop ahead 2-0. The Spartans threatened to tie the game in the fourth but were shut down by the Eagles’ defense. Winthrop had opportunities to extend their lead in the sixth inning but couldn’t capitalize. USC Upstate took advantage in the seventh, scoring five runs to secure the victory.
Winthrop will look to bounce back in the second game of the series against Upstate, scheduled for tomorrow night. The upcoming matchup will be featured as the National Game of the Week on ESPNU, with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
