Rock Hill is set to unveil a new dining and drinking experience with the opening of Elsie’s at Kounter. This unique establishment will feature a speakeasy theme, offering a nod to the rich history of the building it occupies, which has been a significant site for Black history in the area.
Elsie’s at Kounter is a speakeasy-style bar that will be accessible through a concealed entrance. The establishment plans to offer selective memberships, limited to just 50 individuals each year. Only those with a special code word will be allowed entry, emphasizing exclusivity and a sense of adventure.
The driving force behind this new venture is Chef Rob Masone, well-known for his original restaurant, Kounter, which is located within the same historic building. Masone has chosen to name the speakeasy after his grandmother, Elsie, honoring family legacy and connection to local culture.
Elsie’s at Kounter will be situated at 135 East Main Street in downtown Rock Hill. This location is important as it stands on a site that once housed McCrory’s Five and Dime, a notable venue during the civil rights era, where protests and sit-ins were held to challenge racial segregation in the community. The building is now recognized as a stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.
The grand opening of Elsie’s at Kounter is scheduled for December 18. The space encompasses 900 square feet, accommodating up to 45 guests with a bar featuring 14 to 16 seats. Additionally, a private event space of 1,800 square feet will be available upstairs, anticipated to open in spring 2025.
The speakeasy concept serves as a creative approach to blend historical significance with modern dining trends. By invoking the secretive and exclusive nature of speakeasies from the Prohibition era, Chef Masone aims to create a unique atmosphere that pays homage to the past while providing innovative and delicious experiences. The bar’s menu will boast a mix of classic and contemporary cocktails, alongside non-alcoholic selections and gourmet small bites, further enhancing its appeal to a diverse clientele.
Guests at Elsie’s can look forward to an enticing bar menu that includes house-made ingredients such as dry ice, smoked cocktails, and herbal infusions sourced from local vendors. Additionally, a selection of gourmet sweets will complement the drink offerings, ensuring that visitors enjoy a well-rounded experience.
Beyond just a place to eat and drink, Elsie’s at Kounter strives to create a community-oriented venue that respects and celebrates Rock Hill’s cultural heritage. The involvement of local vendors and the historical context of the establishment underscores the commitment to local support and cultural acknowledgment.
With its blend of history, exclusivity, and innovative offerings, Elsie’s at Kounter is poised to become a noteworthy addition to Rock Hill’s vibrant culinary scene. Residents and visitors alike should mark their calendars for December 18, when this much-anticipated venue opens its doors.
