Rock Hill, SC – The greater Rock Hill area is buzzing with excitement as several high school athletes have made significant impacts in their respective sports over the past week. With impressive individual performances in basketball and wrestling, these young athletes are not only contributing to their teams but are also garnering attention as nominees for the Athlete of the Week.
In wrestling, Zane Garcia from Northwestern made headlines with a victory by pin at 126 pounds, leading the Trojans to a 42-36 win against Gaffney on December 2. The sophomore didn’t stop there; he also clinched the 126-pound title at the prestigious Jim Hayes’ Invitational held at Ballantyne Ridge High. Garcia showcased his skills throughout the event, securing four bonus-point wins, solidifying his remarkable start to the season.
Alex Johnson from Catawba Ridge also impressed by winning the 215-pound title and being named the most outstanding wrestler at the Hornet Hammer Invitational, which took place at Aiken High on December 6-7. Johnson dominated his matches, achieving five victories, all by pin.
In boys’ basketball, R.J. Hill of South Pointe had an outstanding performance scoring 22 points, along with 10 rebounds and two steals during a 71-52 win over Northwestern on December 3. He followed this up by posting another double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds in a tight 60-53 victory against Rock Hill. Although South Pointe faced a setback with a 62-56 loss to Keenan on December 7, Hill’s consistent performance has made him a crucial player for his team this season.
Mike Jones from Indian Land also shined, leading his team to a convincing 79-43 win against Forest Hills on December 3 with 16 points, six steals, and three assists. His contributions continued, as he scored another 16 points, along with six rebounds, in a closely contested 57-53 win over Butler on December 6. Currently, Jones is averaging an impressive 19.2 points per game for Indian Land (6-0).
Meanwhile, Kaleigh Lucas, a freshman from South Pointe, is making waves in girls’ basketball. She exploded for a career-high 30 points in a 59-46 victory over Rock Hill on December 5, following a 14-point outing in a 57-7 win over Northwestern on December 3. Lucas averaged 23 points per game during the week, significantly contributing to her team’s strong start with a record of 5-0.
Logan Parker, a 6-foot-2 senior from Fort Mill, averaged 16 points this week, showcasing his all-around abilities despite a challenging loss, and Owen Tatum helped Clover secure a 46-26 win against Boiling Springs following his victories in the 150-pound category. Meanwhile, J’shon Watson from Clover delivered strong performances, scoring 21 points in a 91-63 win against Belmont South Point and maintaining a consistent average of 12.2 points per game.
The excitement surrounding these athletes is palpable as they continue to excel in their sports.
