Rock Hill Launches Urban Linear Park “Storyline” to Revitalize Downtown Area

Rock Hill Unveils New Park Aimed at Revitalizing Downtown

Rock Hill, South Carolina, has officially launched Storyline, a new urban linear park designed to enhance the connectivity of the downtown area. This park, unlike any other in the city, aims not just for recreational space but also as a storytelling mechanism that highlights the city’s history and growth. The announcement was made on Tuesday by city officials who emphasized the park’s integral role as the “spine of our downtown area.”

What is Storyline?

Storyline will stretch approximately two miles, connecting key locations such as Winthrop University and Fountain Park. The park is conceived as an urban linear park, akin to successful projects like the High Line in New York City and the BeltLine in Atlanta. Its design will feature civic spaces and public art that reflects Rock Hill’s journey from a mill town to a thriving commercial hub.

Why is Storyline Important?

Former city manager Joe Lanford described Storyline as vital for the downtown’s development. He proposed that it serve as a connection point for future developments, creating a seamless experience across various neighborhoods. Mayor John Gettys echoed this sentiment, believing that Storyline will be a lasting feature in the city’s landscape for generations to come. “Over time, Storyline will be much more than this one small linear park,” said Gettys.

Where and When Will It Be Built?

Storyline’s route will trace a line from Winthrop University through notable landmarks, eventually reaching Fountain Park. While detailed construction timelines are still being finalized, the city plans to kick off significant development in areas surrounding the park. A highly anticipated pedestrian bridge—which is to be constructed over Dave Lyle Boulevard—will connect the old and new elements of downtown Rock Hill. However, this project will not start until at least 2026.

Funding and Support for the Project

The city has secured a record $10 million federal grant for the pedestrian bridge, in addition to a $25,000 donation from Comporium to help hire a consultant for further planning. Local community leaders and public groups will be actively involved in shaping the park’s features, which will likely unfold over the next ten to twenty years.

A Vision for the Future

The vision for Storyline extends beyond mere aesthetics; it aims to reshape the public’s perception of Rock Hill. Lanford remarked on how the revitalization efforts, including Storyline, could transform what many still see as just a mill town. He believes that enhancing the community’s image will invite further investment and prosperity. “The image and perception of Rock Hill is what creates wealth,” he noted.

Final Thoughts

As Rock Hill prepares for this significant development, city leaders remain hopeful for community engagement and participation. With Storyline poised to become a centerpiece of downtown’s revitalization, the city could soon witness a new chapter in its storied past. While many details are still being worked out, one thing is clear: the future of Rock Hill is being carefully constructed, one step at a time.
