Rock Hill, South Carolina – Police have made significant arrests in two recent drug-related killings, marking a troubling trend of violence linked to illegal narcotics in the city. The arrests, announced by the Rock Hill Police Department, involve separate incidents that both occurred during alleged drug deals.
In the first incident, 35-year-old Melvin Robinson has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Lawrence Howard, who was 31 years old. The second pair of suspects, Christopher King Boyd, 21, and Demetris Maurice Franklin, 19, are facing upgraded charges to murder after a third man, whose identity has not yet been released, died following an altercation over a drug deal.
The police reports indicate that Robinson is facing two additional weapons charges apart from the murder charge. Howard died from multiple gunshot wounds on Amelia Avenue, which is a residential area near Richmond Drive Elementary School. The police have indicated that the shooting was related to an illegal sale of narcotics, though they have not disclosed the specific drugs involved due to an ongoing investigation.
In the earlier incident on November 3, a shooting occurred during what was described as a marijuana deal on Saluda Street. Reports state that one individual attempted to rob the other two when he was shot and later succumbed to his injuries on Friday, prompting the upgrade of charges against the suspects involved.
The first shooting took place on Amelia Avenue in a neighborhood west of Cherry Road, while the second incident occurred on Saluda Street in southern Rock Hill. Despite both shootings being connected to illegal drug activity, the police confirmed that they are not related to one another.
The shooting of Lawrence Howard happened on Wednesday, following which Robinson was arrested, and charges were formally pressed by Tuesday. The other shooting occurred on November 3, with the victim dying on Friday, leading to the upgrade in charges against Boyd and Franklin. Both groups of suspects are currently held in the York County jail without the possibility of bail.
According to police, the common theme in both incidents centers around illegal drug dealings and the violence that can surge from those transactions. Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department emphasized that both events highlight the dangers associated with the drug trade. “There are two different shootings where both occurred during drug deals,” he said.
As the investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the implications of these violent acts and the underlying issues of drug use and distribution in the area. The Rock Hill Police Department has not provided additional information about the investigations, citing their ongoing nature.
This emerging pattern underscores the significant challenges that law enforcement faces in combating drug-related crimes and ensuring public safety in Rock Hill.
