Winthrop University Athletics has announced that Riley Huge and Ashton VanHouse have been named the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month for their outstanding performances in March.
VanHouse played and started in 18 games out of the 22 played by the Eagles in March. She boasted a batting average of .313, stole eight bases, hit a triple, and batted in three runs. VanHouse recorded 18 hits in 60 at-bats and crossed home plate 10 times. In a home double-header against Gardner-Webb, VanHouse stole two bases, went 5-for-7 at the plate, scored twice, and hit a triple. This impressive performance marked her 62nd steal of her career, placing her third on the all-time steals list in Winthrop history.
Huge had a stellar month, playing in five games and starting four. He pitched 29.0 innings, allowing 20 hits, nine runs, and nine walks while striking out an impressive 64 batters. Huge finished the month with a 3-1 record and an ERA of 3.14. His standout game came in an 8-0 victory against Maine, where he pitched 7.2 innings, giving up only one hit and two walks while striking out 20 batters. This performance set a new Winthrop single-game strikeout record, thrusting Huge and the Eagles baseball program into the national spotlight. He garnered national pitcher of the week honors from the NCBWA, NCAA, and Perfect Game, as well as being named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week twice in March.
This recognition marks Huge’s first national player of the week honor for the Eagles since 2006. Both VanHouse and Huge have showcased remarkable talent and dedication, making them deserving recipients of the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month for March.
