Rock Hill, S.C. – As Tropical Storm Debby approaches the Carolinas, parents in Rock Hill are filled with questions about whether the storm will lead to school cancellations on the first day of the 2024-2025 school year. Some families are hoping that the storm will not interfere with their return to the classroom.
“Oh God, summer gonna keep on going, we’ll see about 4 or 5 in the morning,” said parent Sherleen Stewart, expressing her anxiety about the situation. “We’re okay. We got some food, we got all of the essentials, got our school supplies.” Another parent, Ellen Colberg, shared her confidence in the school’s communication, stating that they have been prompt in sharing information about teachers and supplies.
As of Wednesday afternoon, a representative from the Rock Hill School District, Lindsay Machak, confirmed that there are currently no plans to change the school schedule for Thursday. Machak emphasized that transportation safety is a critical factor in their decision-making process. “We work very closely with our local emergency management officials to ensure that roadways are going to be clear and to monitor wind conditions,” she explained.
Reflecting on previous emergencies, Machak reminded the community of past disruptions, including the cancellation of school after a severe hailstorm caused significant damage and debris in the area. The district is committed to making sure students can return to school safely.
Parents are encouraged to stay updated on any changes by checking local resources. With conditions still developing, the final decision will hinge on the weather and the safety of students and staff. Everyone in Rock Hill is hoping for a smooth start to the school year amidst the brewing storm.
