ROCK HILL, S.C. — After severe storms hit York County over the weekend, Rock Hill Schools announced that they will reopen on Wednesday, April 24, following a two-hour delay. The decision comes as administrators aimed to ensure the safety of students and staff navigating potential hazards on their way to school.
The delay is meant to give buses, staff, and families extra time during daylight to travel safely. However, it should be noted that the half-day Pre-K classes at several locations, including Ebinport, Central Child Development Center, and the ATC, have been canceled for that day.
The storms that rolled through Rock Hill brought strong winds and hail, leading to significant damage in the area. Reports indicated winds reaching between 60-90 mph, which caused trees and power lines to fall and resulted in property damage. One significant incident involved the awning of a large gas station being torn down.
Despite the fierce weather, officials confirmed that there was no evidence of a tornado touching down in the area. The National Weather Service has assured the community that the storm’s intensity did not result in a formal tornado warning.
As students return to school, community members are encouraged to remain cautious while driving through affected areas. With the two-hour delay in place, the schools hope to start the day more safely and smoothly.
Families and staff are reminded to stay informed about any further updates as the situation continues to develop.
