Rock Hill, S.C. — A community is in mourning and solidarity as neighbors come together to support the families affected by a tragic shooting that occurred just a week ago at Budiman’s Smoke Shop on Cherry Road. The incident claimed the lives of Celci Johnson, 27, and Emad Saadalla, 49, leaving their families grappling with grief during a time meant for celebration.
Since the shooting, local residents have rallied to collect donations aimed at aiding the victims’ families. Kayla Stanek, front house manager at Richie’s Italian Bistro and organizer of a donation drive, highlighted the community spirit, saying, “You can tell how much the community does care and how much they want to help.” This statement reflects a palpable sense of unity among the citizens of Rock Hill.
The donation drive was initiated to provide essential items and gifts for the families, particularly as the holidays approach. Stanek mentioned that people have been generous, bringing bags filled with gifts and necessities to the restaurant for delivery to the victims’ families. As of now, the monetary donations have reached nearly $2,000, a substantial contribution aimed at easing the families’ burdens during this challenging time.
“This is the least we can do. We can’t take the pain away from them, but if we can just make them smile and ease the pain – even if it’s just for an hour or 15 minutes – that’s all that matters,” Stanek expressed, emphasizing the emotional support the community wishes to provide.
Originally set to close on December 13, the donation drive has been extended through the upcoming weekend due to overwhelming community support. Organizers are still seeking specific items, including diapers, wipes, and clothes for a 15-year-old and an 11-year-old.
The emotional toll of the incident remains heavy in Rock Hill, and efforts are underway to honor the memories of Johnson and Saadalla. Community members are encouraged to share memories and celebrate the lives of those lost. A local initiative, known as More Than A Number, seeks to collect stories and photos, aiming to humanize the victims impacted by the shooting.
“When you’re ready, fill out the form below or send us photos, memories, and other details about them,” a spokesperson for the initiative said, inviting the community to participate in remembering their loved ones.
The tragic event at Budiman’s Smoke Shop has ignited a compassionate response from the Rock Hill community. As residents continue to show their support through donations and remembrance, the hope is that these efforts can bring some comfort to the grieving families during this painful time.
