The community of Rock Hill, South Carolina was brought to a standstill as news of the untimely death of a beloved local teacher reached residents. Jalen Benjamin, a 29-year-old school teacher from the Rock Hill area was killed in a collision as he was headed for a baseball game in Sumter.
The fatal accident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on a Saturday, at mile marker 93 eastbound on Interstate 20 in Kershaw County. According to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office, Benjamin was rear-ended while driving a 2006 Ford F150, causing him fatal injuries at the scene.
Benjamin was much more than a school teacher to the Rock Hill community. Besides mentoring young minds at Legion Collegiate Academy where he worked, Benjamin was also the school’s baseball coach, a role he took very seriously. His dedication to the sport led him to the roads that fateful day, as he was set to attend a baseball game in Sumter when the unfortunate incident happened.
The cause of the collision is presently under investigation, with the authorities leaving no stone unturned. Both the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office are jointly handling the probe.
The sudden and terrible news of Benjamin’s passing has left the community in shock and mourning. Many former students and peers have placed tribute signs at Legion Collegiate Academy’s entrance to honor their beloved teacher and coach.
