In a significant development, the Rock Hill School Board approved a budget which effectively increases the pay for teachers in the area. The new budget of $239 million was passed recently and went into effect earlier this week. This could result in newer teachers witnessing an increase in their paychecks this school year.
The pay rise is particularly beneficial for incoming teachers with no prior experience. These novice educators will observe their base salary rise to $52,000. This amount is a remarkable increase from last year, with a rise of just over $8,000.
For a comprehensive understanding of the various pay increases in the district relative to different years of experience, anyone can refer to the district’s website. The website not only provides an exhaustive understanding of the pay structure but also reassures people about the significant pay rise. Interestingly, this pay increase places York County among the highest-paying counties for teachers, according to local school officials.
When comparing with neighboring North Carolina, it is evident that the teachers in Rock Hill are at an advantage. The base pay for teachers in the state of North Carolina is expected to rise to $41,000 in the upcoming school year. This is significantly less than what is being offered in Rock Hill following the recent changes.
Interestingly, the new budget plan has not caused any increase in costs for taxpayers, nor any raises to the local levy, as per school officials.
Commenting on the changes, Lindsay Machak, the district’s spokeswoman, said that the new budget is intended to be a step in the right direction. She acknowledged the value of teachers in the Rock Hill schools and commended their contribution as the heartbeat of the community.
In addition to pay, Machak also mentioned the strong teacher support throughout the year. This support includes robust professional development opportunities as well as necessary tools that teachers need to inspire success in the students.
The school district expects a substantial contribution of $6.3 million from state sources, as per documents from the school board meeting. Additionally, there will be a $511,397 increase for local and intergovernmental sources.
The approved budget has also resulted in a 2.25% pay increase on the state base for bus drivers, and pay raises for school resource and security officers.
