Snow-covered school building in Rock Hill during winter weather

News Summary

Rock Hill and surrounding school districts are closing schools and shifting to e-learning days due to severe winter weather conditions, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Parents are urged to keep children home as after-school activities are canceled. Weather warnings have been issued, prompting residents to prepare for travel disruptions and adverse conditions. Local authorities recommend staying informed about ongoing updates.

Rock Hill Faces Winter Weather Challenges as Schools Close

As winter weather approaches, the city of Rock Hill finds itself bracing for impact as severe conditions sweep through the area. With forecasts predicting snow, sleet, and freezing rain, school districts have decided to close their doors for the safety of students, staff, and families.

School Closures and E-Learning Days

Rock Hill Schools have announced that students will engage in an e-learning day on Friday, which means parents should hold off on sending kids to school. Unfortunately, this also means that all extracurricular activities have been canceled for the duration of Friday and Saturday. It’s a similar story across the region.

Fort Mill Schools have opted to close all facilities, continuing with e-learning for students. The school district has also called off after-school activities, including sports, and facilities will remain closed throughout Saturday.

Clover Schools, too, have shut their doors. Students will partake in remote learning, but don’t expect any live instruction. Assignments will be available for students to complete at their own pace, with staff available online to provide support. Just like the other school districts, Clover has canceled all athletic events on Friday and Saturday as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, York Schools have also decided to close, and students will transition to remote learning with all athletic events canceled for the weekend. Similarly, Lancaster County Schools will keep their doors closed and move to e-learning from Friday through Sunday, ensuring that all facilities and scheduled events are also called off.

In Chester County, schools will follow suit with closures leading to remote learning for students. With all facilities closed from Friday through Sunday, students will receive assignments to complete at home without attending online classes.

For York Prep, it’s a different approach: the school is implementing a half-day schedule, where kindergarten through fourth-grade students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m., followed by older grades at noon. However, all after-school activities for the day have been canceled.

Legion Collegiate Academy had to postpone all basketball games scheduled for Friday, and Saturday’s girl’s game has been rescheduled to a later date in February due to the inclement weather.

Riverwalk Academy is also adjusting its schedule, planning an early release day with kindergarten through fifth-grade students finishing at 11:05 a.m., while older grades are dismissed shortly thereafter at 11:30 a.m. Like other schools in the area, all after-school activities are called off for the day.

Weather Warnings and Forecast

National Weather Service has issued a *winter storm watch* for Rock Hill, warning residents to prepare for adverse weather conditions. The forecast shows a potential chance of snow before 2 p.m. on Friday, with an 80% chance of precipitation as the day progresses. A mix of snow, sleet, ice, and freezing rain is expected to continue into Friday night, causing travel disruptions and safety concerns.

With temperatures dipping low, a chilly low of around 29 degrees is anticipated for Friday night, along with the likelihood of sleet making an appearance Saturday morning. Residents are encouraged to stay safe and consider their travel plans carefully during this wintry blast.

As schools across Rock Hill and surrounding areas adapt to these challenging weather conditions, community members are reminded to remain vigilant and up-to-date with the latest alerts and recommendations from local authorities.
