Rock Hill Prepares for Winter Weather: School Closures Announced

Rock Hill Prepares for Winter Weather: School Closures Announced

As winter weather approaches, the city of Rock Hill is gearing up for a chilly Friday filled with snow, sleet, and ice. The forecast from the National Weather Service predicts a winter storm watch for the area, leading several local school districts to make adjustments to their schedules. With snowfall expected before 2 PM and a whopping 100% chance of precipitation set for the evening, parents and students should prepare for a day of online learning and canceled activities.

School District Updates

Here’s what you need to know about how various school districts in the Rock Hill area will handle the impending winter weather:

  • Rock Hill School District: Students will participate in an eLearning day, meaning they will not need to go to school in person. All extracurricular activities planned for Friday and Saturday are canceled.
  • Fort Mill School District: All facilities will be closed on Friday, with students shifting to virtual classes. Sadly, after-school activities, including sports, are also off the table, and Saturday facilities will remain closed as well.
  • Clover School District: School officials have opted for remote learning on Friday, but instead of live instruction, students will receive assignments to work on at home. Staff will be available online for any questions. Athletic events scheduled for Friday and Saturday have also been canceled.
  • York School District: This district is following suit with remote learning on Friday and cancellation of all athletic events for both Friday and Saturday.
  • Lancaster County School District: All school facilities will close on Friday, transitioning to eLearning. Scheduled events from Friday through Sunday are canceled.
  • Chester County School District: Following the trend, this district will also shift to remote learning for Friday, with facilities closed until Sunday. Students will receive work for the day, but there won’t be any online instruction.
  • York Prep: A half-day schedule will be in effect on Friday, with younger students (Kindergarten through fourth grade) finishing at 11:30 AM and older students dismissing at noon. All after-school activities will be canceled.
  • Legion Collegiate Academy: All basketball games scheduled for Friday have been postponed, with the Saturday girls’ game rescheduled for February.
  • Riverwalk Academy: An early release is in place for Friday, with Kindergarten through fifth grade finishing at 11:05 AM and older students at 11:30 AM. Again, after-school activities are canceled.

Weather Forecast

The weather predictions for Friday are quite concerning, as a mix of snow, sleet, and icy rain is expected to blanket the area. With temperatures sinking to a low of 29 degrees, we can anticipate some slippery roads and possibly hazardous conditions later in the day. If you plan to head out, it’s best to take your time and drive carefully.

Looking ahead to Saturday, there’s a possibility of sleet early in the morning, but things may clear up a bit with a mostly sunny day expected later on. With high temperatures only reaching around 42 degrees, and nighttime lows dipping to 19 degrees, it seems winter is truly settling in.

Stay Safe and Be Prepared

If you’re a parent or student in Rock Hill or the surrounding areas, make sure to keep an eye on the weather updates and be prepared for remote learning. With so many schools altering their schedules, it’s crucial to stay informed and safe during this winter weather.

This is a developing story, and as more information comes in, we’ll make sure to keep everyone updated. Stay warm, Rock Hill!
