San Diego High School Football Kicks Off the Season

The San Diego Section football season is officially underway, and teams across the area are showing strong performances. The reigning Open Division champions, Granite Hills, wasted no time getting into rhythm this past weekend as they scored a solid 28-17 victory against Mission Hills. As the second week of games unfolded, the excitement continued with no significant shake-ups among the top ten teams.

Granite Hills, currently ranked number one, put on a remarkable display in their recent matchup against Mater Dei Catholic, racking up an impressive 56 points to win 56-28. Their next challenge comes as they travel to Arizona to face Perry this Saturday in the prestigious Honor Bowl at Cathedral Catholic.

Meanwhile, Lincoln notched a much-needed win as they traveled to Long Beach Poly, defeating the Jackrabbits 42-14. Senior running back Aden Jackson was a standout, scoring four touchdowns in the effort. The Hornets will continue on the road this week with another matchup against Coronado in Las Vegas.

Other notable happenings in week two included Cathedral Catholic and quarterback Brady Palmer, who made his much-anticipated debut leading the Dons to a decisive 34-13 win against Chaminade. San Marcos showed off their impressive offense as junior quarterback Kreet Makihele threw for a staggering 469 yards with six touchdowns in their victory over Tesoro.

The rest of the top ten saw Mission Hills bounce back with a convincing 42-0 win against Westview, while Mount Miguel cruised to a 54-12 victory over Rancho Buena Vista. La Costa Canyon also had a solid outing, defeating Del Norte 49-8 behind junior quarterback Quinn Roth’s four touchdown passes.

As action continues, La Jolla edged out Torrey Pines in a tight game, promising an exciting couple of weeks ahead with matchups against Madison and Rancho Bernardo. With so many teams on the rise, fans are in for a thrilling football season in San Diego.
