Rock Hill Parents Uncertain About School’s Opening Day Amidst Tropical Storm

ROCK HILL, S.C. – As Tropical Storm Debby approaches the Carolinas, many parents in Rock Hill are anxiously wondering if the storm will affect the first day of school for the 2024-2025 academic year. The storm is expected to hit late Wednesday night, leading to concerns about possible cancellations.

Local parent Sherleen Stewart expressed her worries, stating, “Oh God, summer gonna keep on going. We’ll see about 4 or 5 in the morning.” Meanwhile, another parent, Ellen Colberg, remained calm, saying, “We’re okay. We got some food, we got all of the essentials, got our school supplies.” She added that the schools have done a good job of communicating important information, including teacher assignments and necessary supplies.

In an effort to clarify the district’s plans, inquiries were made to Rock Hill Schools regarding any schedule changes ahead of the big day. Lindsay Machak, a spokeswoman for the district, shared that, as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, there were no plans to change the schedule for Thursday. However, she emphasized that “transportation safety plays a major part in our decision.”

Machak detailed how the district closely collaborates with local emergency management officials. “We work to ensure that roadways are going to be clear,” she noted. This includes monitoring wind conditions and assessing how parents might be impacted by the storm.

She also referred to a previous incident where school was canceled due to severe damage caused by hail earlier in the year, demonstrating the district’s commitment to student safety.

As the first day approaches, parents and school officials alike remain vigilant, hoping for clear skies and safe conditions for students’ return to class.
