Rock Hill, S.C. – As families prepare for the first day of school in the Rock Hill School District, a tropical storm is raising questions about whether school will open as scheduled. Tropical Storm Debby is expected to make its way toward the Carolinas late Wednesday night, creating a wave of uncertainty for parents.
“Oh God, summer gonna keep on going,” said Sherleen Stewart, a parent in Rock Hill. She expressed concern about how the weather could impact their plans. However, she remained upbeat, adding, “We’re okay. We got some food, we got all of the essentials, got our school supplies. I think we’re good either way.”
Another parent, Ellen Colberg, mentioned that the schools have been effective in communicating important details regarding teachers and supplies for the new year. “The schools that they go to have been really good about getting communication out, so I think we’re good,” she explained.
To get clarity on the situation, local schools were contacted for their stance on the opening day. As of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Lindsay Machak, a spokesperson for the district, stated that they had no plans to change the current schedule. She emphasized that the safety of transportation is a top priority in making any decision regarding school closures.
“We work closely with our local emergency management officials to ensure roadways will be clear and to assess wind conditions. We also consider how parents might be impacted,” Machak explained. She recalled a previous incident where the school district canceled classes due to severe weather from massive hail that caused significant damage and debris in the area.
As families in Rock Hill await more updates, they remain hopeful for a smooth start to the school year despite the looming storm. For ongoing updates regarding school closures or delays, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local channels.
