Rock Hill’s Pawsitive Action Boosts Veterans’ Lives with Service Dogs

Rock Hill, SC – In a heartwarming initiative that connects veterans with therapy dogs, Pawsitive Action is changing lives. This nonprofit organization, founded by Norma Ross, offers invaluable support to veterans, helping them cope with the emotional weight of their experiences.

Who is Benefiting?

One veteran positively impacted by this program is 73-year-old Michael Gegoski. A Vietnam War veteran, Gegoski has faced tremendous personal loss, having lost both his wife and eldest son in recent years. Struggling with his grief, he found it increasingly difficult to navigate crowded environments. However, a life-changing encounter with a therapy dog named Armi has rekindled his spirit.

What is Pawsitive Action?

Pawsitive Action is a nonprofit based in Rock Hill that specializes in training therapy dogs for military veterans. Since its inception in 2008 in Florida, the organization has expanded its reach and is now instrumental in aiding veterans in York County. Their mission revolves around pairing veterans with service dogs to help alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and improve overall mental health.

When and Where do the Training Sessions Occur?

Training sessions occur twice a week at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2889 in Rock Hill. Classes are held every Wednesday and Saturday, providing veterans with an opportunity to bond with their dogs in a supportive environment. Furthermore, the organization encourages community engagement by organizing outings with veterans and their service dogs on Fridays.

Why is This Important?

The importance of mental health support for veterans cannot be understated. Pawsitive Action is part of a broader network of organizations aimed at improving veterans’ quality of life. Research indicates that veterans who are paired with service dogs tend to experience lower levels of anxiety and a reduced likelihood of being diagnosed with PTSD. A notable study presented this summer highlighted the positive outcomes for veterans involved in such programs.

Norma Ross, sharing her motivation for starting Pawsitive Action, said, “I wanted to do something that was a little more meaningful, that was going to make a bigger difference to people.” With her background in dog training, Ross transitioned from traditional dog shows to creating connections that facilitate healing through these canine companions.

Collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs

In 2021, the U.S. Congress passed the PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act, which further highlights the federal commitment to supporting veterans through canine training. This legislation mandates that the Department of Veterans Affairs implement a pilot program providing trained service dogs to veterans with PTSD. This action aligns with Pawsitive Action’s goals, ensuring medical support is also available for the dogs.

Richard Parrilla, a certified peer support specialist from the VA Clinic in Columbia, emphasized the multi-faceted benefits of having a service dog. His companion, a dog named General Patton, assists him daily with tasks and emotional support. Parrilla explained, “He does nightmare interruptions… If my anxiety gets the better of me, he can sense that.” This example underscores the profound impact service dogs can have on their owners’ mental health and daily functioning.

Conclusion

Pawsitive Action is not just a stepping stone for veterans to regain their footing; it is a lifeline. By pairing these brave individuals with specially trained dogs, the organization plays a crucial role in their journeys towards healing and recovery. As Rock Hill continues to develop its support systems for veterans, Pawsitive Action stands out as a beacon of hope in the community.
