Columbia and the Midlands are set to experience a significant shift in weather as a cold front brings heavy thunderstorms starting Monday. With temperatures soaring to 80 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend, residents should prepare for a cool-down and the possibility of severe storms. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for thunderstorms, tornado watches, and strong winds, urging residents to stay informed and prioritize safety. While the storms may complicate life for some, they could bring much-needed relief to firefighters battling wildfires in the region.
Residents of Columbia and the surrounding Midlands have been enjoying pleasant, warm spring weather this week, but it looks like Mother Nature is about to throw a curveball. Get ready for a shift in conditions as rainy weather is set to roll in late on Sunday, with heavy thunderstorms rumored to arrive on the scene come Monday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has put out a warning regarding a cold front expected to sweep through the region on Monday afternoon. This front is anticipated to bring with it the potential for some serious thunderstorms. While we love a good rain dance, it’s important to be aware that some of these storms could be severe.
In the meantime, temperatures are on the rise with highs reaching a toasty 80 degrees Fahrenheit on both Friday and Saturday. However, don’t get too comfortable, as a cool-down is on the horizon for Sunday. The day will kick off with a 50% chance of rain in the afternoon, which will then ramp up to an 80% chance of thunderstorms on Monday!
On a positive note, the forecasted rain could bring some relief to firefighters battling a massive blaze down near Table Rock in Pickens County, where flames have been spreading across more than 8,000 acres. Those involved in firefighting efforts are undoubtedly hoping for a little help from the sky.
Did you know that lightning strikes the U.S. around 25 million times each year, particularly during summer? Unfortunately, it contributes to roughly 20 fatalities annually. If you hear thunder, your best bet is to stay indoors until it passes. If you must be outside, aim to find a sturdy shelter. On the road, be cautious—heavy rain can cause slippery driving conditions. A good tip is to watch for swollen waterways and reduce your speed to avoid skidding.
Residents of Columbia need to stay vigilant, as a tornado was sighted near Dreher Island, heading toward the Lake Murray Dam. Wind gusts could reach an alarming 60 mph, posing significant risks to trees, vehicles, and homes alike. If you’re near the lake, be warned that a lake wind advisory is in effect until 8 p.m., with winds hitting up to 25 mph and gusts potentially reaching 40 mph.
The forecast for Sunday looks gray and wet, with a staggering 90% chance of rain. Locals can expect localized amounts exceeding half an inch in some areas. After the rain clears out on Sunday, expect a return to drier days ahead, with temperatures climbing back to a warm 78 degrees by Wednesday.
So, Columbia, hang on tight! The weather is on the move, and while some storms may cause a ruckus, they could also pave the way for that refreshing spring weather we adore. Stay safe, stay informed, and enjoy those sunny days ahead!
