High School Football Season Kicks Off in South Bend with Exciting Performances and Player of the Week Poll

The football season has officially kicked off in South Bend, and the first week brought plenty of excitement. With thrilling games and standout performances, it’s clear that local high school athletes have set the bar high as they compete for excellence on the field. Now, fans have the chance to weigh in on who they think was the top performer.

A total of seven players are in the running for this week’s Player of the Week title, all showcasing impressive skills and contributions in their respective games. The voting poll is live and will be open until midnight ET on Thursday, August 29. Fans can cast their votes as many times as they like throughout the poll duration. The link to the poll can be found at the bottom of the page.

Here’s a look at the nominees, listed in alphabetical order by school:

  • Benwell (Position: Quarterback) – In a 27-17 victory over Boone Grove, he rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing a 51-yard touchdown pass.
  • O’Neal – He played a key role in the Cavemen’s comeback against Marian, scoring three touchdowns in the second half, contributing to a decisive 41-24 win.
  • Scott – Making an impact on both sides of the ball, he scored two short touchdowns on offense and recorded five tackles and a sack in the 33-14 triumph over LaPorte.
  • Jarrell – Celebrating his first varsity start, he passed for 166 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for another score in a solid 34-12 win against Jimtown.
  • Watson – Having a breakout game in a thrilling 49-42 victory against Valparaiso, Watson was responsible for all seven touchdowns, rushing for four and passing for three.
  • Ramirez – Helping the Rockies secure a 53-20 win over Twin Lakes, he racked up 227 rushing yards, 142 passing yards, and five total touchdowns.
  • Jackson – On defense, he was a historic presence, achieving two of his team’s four safeties—the most in a single game in IHSAA history—and contributing with 13 tackles in a dominating 35-0 victory against Hammond Noll.
