Rock Hill, South Carolina: A Stabbing Incident at Local Mosque Raises Concerns

In a startling turn of events, a stabbing incident occurred on Friday afternoon at Masjid Al Salaam in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Just after 2 p.m., police received reports of the attack, which prompted a significant response from law enforcement officials.

What Happened?

According to the details, the incident unfolded during a regular service. A man, later identified as Travaughn West (27 years old), had been attending the mosque for a few months. Eyewitness accounts provided by mosque spokesperson Jasiri Makadara reveal that during the service, “something set [West] off,” leading him to pull out a knife.

The stabbing victim, who is a local business owner and a co-owner of Shabazz Barber Shop—a staple of the community since 1989—was tragically caught in the middle of the chaos. His brother, Naim Shabazz, was right next to him when the incident occurred. In a state of shock, he recalled that at first, he thought West was just playing. “I didn’t really know what happened… I thought it was some playful stomach punch,” he reflected, recounting the moment when his brother screamed that he had been stabbed.

Immediate Action and Response

After the stabbing, an immediate response from the mosque community ensued. A regular attendee, who works as a security guard, spotted the altercation and reacted swiftly. He pulled out his firearm in an attempt to stop the attacker. Fearful for the safety of those around him, the security guard took decisive action by firing at West as he fled the scene. Fortunately, police were quick to locate West on Laurel Street and apprehended him.

Understanding the Background

Makadara mentioned that West had always seemed a bit “odd,” but emphasized that the mosque opens its doors to everyone who identifies with their beliefs. “If you have said, ‘I believe in Allah. I believe in God,’ and you take the Shahada, that’s the oath to become a Muslim, then we accept you into the house of worship,” he stated, highlighting the mosque’s welcoming spirit.

Aftermath and Charges

The victim is recovering and is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries. Meanwhile, police confirmed that West’s wounds weren’t serious, but he is facing serious charges. Once he is discharged from the hospital, he will be taken into custody and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a knife during a crime of violence. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack, but it was noted that it was not religiously motivated.

A Community in Shock

The community reacts with a mix of relief that the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, and pain for the victim’s family. “It’s sad but it’s reality,” Naim Shabazz shared. “Sometimes, random things happen and sometimes random things happen to good people.”

The swift response from law enforcement, combined with the actions of the mosque’s security guard, undoubtedly helped prevent further harm. But the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and support in the face of unexpected challenges.

As Rock Hill reflects on this incident, the community is rallying together, hoping for healing and understanding in the wake of such a traumatic event.
