A unique culinary experience has begun in downtown Waxhaw, North Carolina. The town welcomed a new restaurant, Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse and Grill, to its hospitality scene on July 12. This English and Irish kitchen, adorned with a steampunk theme, draws inspiration from the iconic Robert Louis Stevenson story. Much like its namesake, Jekyll & Hyde embraces a dual personality, with its dining section and bar area offering contrasting ambiances.
The restaurant beams with warm hues and woodwork, offering a calming atmosphere. In contrast, the bar area introduces guests to a metallic and darker ambiance which resonates with the steampunk theme. Besides a unique interior, the restaurant’s signature feature is its in-house distillery, which can be observed from the bar area.
Jekyll & Hyde, the brainchild of Frank La Fragola, has two other locations in Matthews and Belmont. But, the new Waxhaw branch stands out not only for being the newest but also for housing the in-house distillery.
Jekyll & Hyde’s menu features classic English/Irish dishes such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, and Hyde’s shepherd’s pie, along with a wide array of burgers and steaks. The pricing ranges from $15-$20 for an entree and $9-$18 for brunch. The restaurant also boasts a bar with an impressive selection of over 50 different beers on draft.
The interior of the restaurant lives up to its theme, with decors featuring different gears and cogs. A dazzling gear fixture at the restaurant’s entrance provides a warm welcome to visitors. While in the bar area, the on-site distillery—encased in a copper cage—allows patrons to observe the spirit-making process while enjoying their own beverages.
La Fragola’s decision to open a venue in Waxhaw was driven by his desire to enrich the downtown area. He expressed a keen interest in creating a “fun and exciting” place that attracts people who usually seek upscale locales. He also expressed belief that the opening will positively impact the local community.
Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse and Grill, located at 216 W. Main St. in downtown Waxhaw, is open from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-midnight Friday and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant is set to attract a fresh crowd and boost the downtown Waxhaw area. Be it their great product or the ambiance, La Fragola is poised to add significant allure to the already charming town of Waxhaw.
