Excitement Builds as Texas High School Football Season Kicks Off with Nearly 1,500 Games This Weekend

This week, excitement fills Texas as the highly anticipated 2024 high school football season kicks off on Thursday. Almost 1,500 games are set to unfold throughout the weekend, marking the beginning of what promises to be an electrifying year. While some powerhouse teams, like Duncanville, are not hitting the field until next week, there is no shortage of exciting matchups to look forward to.

One of the standout games is when McKinney faces Frisco Emerson at The Star in Frisco on Thursday at 7 p.m. This game is particularly special as it will be the inaugural match for McKinney’s new head coach, Nate Leonard. The Lions concluded the last season with a solid 9-3 record and return key players like linebacker Riley Pettijohn, a committed Ohio State recruit. Meanwhile, Frisco Emerson aims to capitalize on its last season’s impressive run to the semifinals, despite losing its quarterback, Michael Hawkins, who is now playing for Oklahoma.

On the same day, Highland Park and Rockwall-Heath will square off in Rockwall at Wilkerson-Memorial Stadium. Highland Park is looking to bounce back after a successful yet challenging 11-2 season while dropping down to 5A. Conversely, Rockwall-Heath aims to build on last year’s achievements against tough competition.

Thursday’s action is just the start, as Friday will see several thrilling matchups. Notably, Aledo, with its remarkable 12-state championships, will clash with Denton Guyer, the Wildcats looking to improve on their previous 7-4 season. At C.H. Collins Stadium, Longview and Lufkin will reignite their heated rivalry in the 87th edition of their face-off, with Longview holding a historical edge in the series.

This opening weekend promises to deliver many unforgettable moments, setting the stage for a thrilling season of Texas high school football. Fans can catch all the games live via NFHS Network, ensuring they won’t miss any of the action as these talented young athletes make their mark on the field.
