In Foxborough, former NFL superstar Tom Brady has recently opened up about his concerns regarding how the game has changed over the years. As he prepares to step into his new role as a broadcaster, Brady shared his thoughts during an appearance with Stephen A. Smith at Fanatics Fest. He expressed that both college football and the NFL have become “dumbed down” and that there is not enough development for rookie players nowadays.
Brady reminisced about his time at the University of Michigan, noting that college programs have shifted away from thorough training. “There used to be college programs,” he stated, contrasting them with modern college teams that focus more on playbooks rather than comprehensive learning experiences. He described his own journey at Michigan, where he spent five years honing his skills, learning to read defenses, and improving as a player.
He emphasized the importance of development in college football, explaining that the current trend of forcing rookies to play early in the NFL can be detrimental. Brady argued that this trend is a product of simplifying the game, which ultimately hampers the depth of coaching and learning that players experience. “The reality is the only reason why [rookies] are [playing right away] is because we dumbed the game down,” he remarked. “It used to be thought of at a higher level.”
As the NFL prepares for another season, the discussion around rookie quarterbacks, such as Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, continues on whether they are ready to take on starting roles. Some argue that this baptism by fire can work for certain players who have benefitted from college programs built to transition them into the NFL. However, not every player thrives under this pressure.
Brady’s insights provide an interesting perspective as fans eagerly anticipate his debut as a commentator. How he analyzes offenses and defenses across the league will surely draw attention as he shares his expertise with viewers.
