In Shawnee, Kansas, the high school football community is grieving the loss of a young player. Ovet Gomez Regalado, a 15-year-old sophomore from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, tragically passed away just two days after suffering a medical emergency during an off-season conditioning session. The incident took place on Wednesday, and sadly, he died on Friday.
The school principal, Dr. Lisa Gruman, reached out to students and families with a heartfelt message. She acknowledged the difficulty of coping with such a loss, especially for someone so young. Dr. Gruman emphasized the importance of acknowledging emotions and encouraged parents to support their children during this challenging time. “Your child may struggle to make sense of this death. Please encourage your child to express their feelings, and be there to talk with them about what has happened,” she stated.
In addition to the message from the principal, the Shawnee Mission Northwest Football Booster Club shared their condolences. They expressed their heartfelt sorrow over the loss of Ovet and offered prayers and thoughts to his family, teammates, and coaches. “Our football family has suffered the tragic loss of one of our own,” the club stated. They also mentioned their commitment to support the family and plan to collaborate with the school to find ways to honor Ovet’s memory.
This incident comes on the heels of another recent tragedy in the world of youth football, as a 14-year-old player from Alabama also lost his life after collapsing during practice. Following the loss, Shawnee Mission Northwest football is set to begin their pre-season practice, scheduled for Monday as they prepare for the upcoming 2024 season.
The loss of Ovet Gomez Regalado has sent ripples of sadness throughout the community, reminding everyone of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of grief.
