Rock Hill Parents Worry About School Cancellations Amid Tropical Storm Debby

ROCK HILL, S.C. – As Tropical Storm Debby heads towards the Carolinas, parents in Rock Hill are left anxious about potential school cancellations for the first day of the 2024-2025 school year.

The storm is expected to make landfall late Wednesday night, leading many parents to speculate about what this means for their children’s return to classes. Sherleen Stewart, a Rock Hill parent, expressed her worries, saying, “Oh God, summer gonna keep on going, we’ll see about 4 or 5 in the morning.”

Another parent, Ellen Colberg, remains more optimistic. She noted, “We’re okay. We got some food, we got all of the essentials, got our school supplies.” Colberg also praised the schools for their communication about teacher assignments and other necessary preparations for the upcoming school year.

WBTV reached out to Rock Hill Schools for clarification on their plans. As of Wednesday afternoon, Lindsay Machak, a spokesperson for the district, indicated that there were no changes to the school schedule expected for Thursday. However, she emphasized that transportation safety is a crucial factor in their decision-making process.

The district collaborates closely with local emergency management officials to assess conditions, including road safety and wind projections that could impact families. Machak highlighted past incidents, noting that school was previously canceled after severe hail damaged areas in the region.

As the storm approaches, residents are urged to stay informed about any potential changes through official channels. The first day of school is a critical time for students and families, and ensuring everyone’s safety remains the top priority.
