Winthrop University Athletics in South Carolina is anticipating the induction of several outstanding contributors to their 2024 Hall of Fame. Among these inductees is Tyson Waterman, a notable figure in the university’s basketball program.
Waterman, first entered the Winthrop University Men’s Basketball program in 1995 and immediately left a positive imprint. Averaging 12.5 points per game in his first year, he was honored as the All-Big South Conference Rookie of the Year.
However, academic challenges and disagreements with the head coach led to a temporary exit. He returned to the university and contributed significantly to earning the Eagles their first trip to the NCAA tournament. Waterman’s influence on the team went over and beyond his skill on the court, as the head coach likened his tactical understanding to another coach on the floor.
These days, Tyson Waterman has taken up a vocation he had envisioned since his time in high school basketball – coaching. He currently serves as an assistant coach and recruitment coordinator at the University of Central Florida, thus reflecting the natural progression of his interest in the game.
Before his position at the University of Central Florida, Waterman engaged in numerous ventures contributing to the sport. As the founder and head coach of Believe Academy in Rock Hill, South Carolina, he engineered a strong basketball program. He also spent a year as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Returning to Winthrop University, Waterman was tasked with developing the Eagles’ gaming strategy as the on-floor coach. His return was marked by a transformative culture that went on to lead the Eagles to the NCAA tournament. His stellar performance in the two tournament games is remembered as a pivotal moment in the Eagles’ basketball history.
Tyson Waterman’s contributions to Winthrop University are recorded in history as his jersey number 41 was retired in 2001. He sits fifth on the all-time scoring list, with 1,461 points. His second time standing at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony reflects his significant involvement with the basketball program, having been previously individually honored in 2007.
Whether it be as a player or a coach, Tyson Waterman has proven his dedication to advancing the sport. As he continues to coach, he looks forward to instilling the same passion and discipline he exercised during his time at Winthrop University.
