Undefeated Morgan Claims 3A State Championship Title

The city of Morgan celebrated as the Trojans clinched the 3A state championship with a victory over Richfield, securing a 13-2 win at Southern Utah University. Despite their offense drawing most of the limelight throughout the season, it was the Trojans’ elite defense that proved vital against another undefeated team.

Heading into the championship, Morgan’s offensive unit had averaged an impressive 46.6 points per game, yet their defense had also been formidable, allowing just 6.3 points per game and shutting out six teams this season. Defensive standout, Nik Preece, reflected on the team’s defensive performance, stating, “Just being tough, going out and hitting them hard… It’s amazing we only allowed two points in the state championship game.”

Throughout the match, Morgan’s defense was relentless, limiting Richfield’s high-powered offense significantly. Richfield managed only a few drives, none of which resulted in points until they gained a safety early in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead. The Trojans quickly bounced back with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Beck Sheffield to Lincoln Gilson, giving them a 7-2 lead in the second quarter.

The game continued to witness ups and downs, with turnovers and penalties impacting the flow. However, Morgan managed to extend their lead further just before halftime with a 3-yard rushing touchdown from Sheffield, leading 13-2 after a failed extra point attempt. Coach Jared Barlow felt the key moment was that last score before the break, saying it was crucial for momentum.

In a defense-focused second half, Richfield struggled to maintain possession, only managing to touch the ball three times. Morgan’s defense stuffed two fourth-down attempts from Richfield late in the game. Once Morgan regained possession, the objective was clear: a lengthy drive to run out the clock. “The best thing we can have right now is a seven-minute drive, put the game away,” Barlow instructed. His team executed the strategy flawlessly, securing their ninth state championship title in school history.

Sheffield’s performance included 119 passing yards along with 63 rushing yards, while teammate Drew Korth provided 76 rushing yards to help seal the victory. Morgan’s commitment to both offense and defense was evident, showcasing their determination and teamwork throughout the season. The town of Morgan has much to be proud of as they celebrate this well-deserved championship win.
