Tragic Fall Claims Life of McAllen High School Football Player at Underage Drinking Party

McAllen, Texas – A tragic incident occurred over the weekend when a 17-year-old high school football player, Adan De La Cruz III, lost his life after falling off a roof during a party that involved underage drinking. The accident happened early Saturday morning when De La Cruz was at a house party filled with alcohol and teenagers. He was standing on top of a gazebo roof with a friend who jumped into a pool below. Unfortunately, De La Cruz slipped and fell, striking his head and neck on the concrete patio beneath.

Following the fall, De La Cruz was left unconscious and in need of immediate medical attention. Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 2:00 a.m. to find a chaotic gathering, with several teens attempting to help De La Cruz. Reports indicate a girl directed officers to him, and those present had begun life-saving efforts until professional help arrived. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remained for four days before succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday.

The party, which had been heavily marketed on social media, was reportedly charging guests an entry fee of $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Alcoholic beverages were readily available without any checks, raising concern over how such gatherings are supervised. Authorities later arrested one adult and two minors for allegedly providing alcohol to minors at the party. The adult, a 51-year-old man, and his 16-year-old son were identified as the party’s organizers.

The Nikki Rowe High School community is grieving the loss of De La Cruz, who was well-liked by his peers. A candle-lit memorial has been planned to honor his memory. In a statement, the school district expressed their sorrow, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of one of our students… He will be missed, but not forgotten.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by underage drinking and the need for proper supervision at gatherings. Community members continue to process the tragedy as it highlights the serious implications of such parties for teens.
