Vermont High School Fall Sports Kickoff: Thrilling Matches in Soccer, Field Hockey, and Volleyball

This week in Vermont, the high school fall sports season kicked off with exciting matches across various sports, including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running.

In the field hockey realm, Vermont edged out UC Davis 3-2 in a thrilling overtime match. Marie Dijkstra was the star, scoring both the tying goal and the game-winner with just 42 seconds left in the first overtime period. Meg Weyer contributed with one goal, while goalie Ila Gunner made four key saves during the match.

Other notable results include South Burlington‘s decisive 8-0 victory over Rutland, where Sawyer Bailey led the charge with three goals. Colchester and Burlington applied pressure as well, defeating BFA-St. Albans and St. Johnsbury with scores of 5-1 and 5-1 respectively. Notably, Glenna Westbrook had a standout performance for Burlington, netting two goals in their win.

In soccer, Essex recorded a dominant 5-0 victory against Mount Mansfield, highlighted by Bella Delphia’s two goals and one assist. Meanwhile, North Country secured a 3-0 victory over U-32, thanks in part to a strong goal from Sabine Brueck just 28 seconds into the game.

In volleyball, South Burlington won comfortably against Mount Mansfield with sets of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-20. On the other hand, Essex claimed victory over Burlington in a tough match, winning convincingly in three straight sets.

As the season advances, teams are gearing up for more action next week, with fixtures scheduled starting Saturday morning throughout the state.
