Virginia High School Football Rankings Shakeup as 2024 Season Progresses
As the 2024 Virginia high school football season is well underway, the competition is fierce and the rankings are anything but stable. The latest On3 Massey Ratings Top 25 list, updated on September 11, shows that a whopping 15 teams have shuffled positions on the list following another weekend of games. Out of these, six teams managed to rise in the standings, with one team making a notable jump of four spots.
However, not all teams were as fortunate, as nine teams saw their rankings drop, with three teams taking a hit of two places lower. With more games on the horizon, the rankings remain poised for further changes. Here’s a closer look at how the teams are stacking up.
Top Teams in the State
Freedom retains its top spot, expected to kick off their season on September 27 against the Gar-Field Red Wolves. With standout players like wide receiver Carleton Preston and running back Jeff Overton, they are recognized as the best offense and second-best defense in the state.
Moving to second position, the Phoebus Phantoms opened their campaign with a convincing 23-7 win over sixth-ranked Highland Springs, showcasing an impressive offensive performance with 281 yards. They aim to continue their success with upcoming games against Woodside and Heritage.
Commodores at number three, added a victory over the Wise Pumas to their record, with a strong defensive show limiting their opponents to 14 points. While the Bulldogs climbed one spot after their 35-21 season opener win, the Warhawks dropped one despite winning both their first games.
The Tigers have also started strong, with dominant wins, including a recent 54-16 victory against I.C. Norcom. Their matchup against Great Bridge on September 13 will be one to watch.
Significantly, the Hilltoppers made the largest leap on the list, moving up four spots after an impressive performance against Patrick Henry, led by quarterback Max Calloway.
As the season heats up, every game plays a crucial role in shaping the rankings, keeping players, coaches, and fans on the edge of their seats as the battle for the top spot continues.
