The college football season kicked off in Atlanta with some impressive performances and a few surprises in Week 1.
The Georgia Bulldogs proved once again that their defense is a force to be reckoned with, crushing Clemson with a final score of 34-3. The Bulldogs limited the Tigers to just 188 yards of offense, and notable players like linebackers Jalon Walker and Raylen Wilson consistently applied pressure on quarterback Cade Klubnik. Freshman safety KJ Bolden also impressed in his debut with four tackles. While Georgia’s defense shone, concerns about the depth on their defensive line arose when standout Mykel Williams was seen leaving in a walking boot.
Meanwhile, Ohio State introduced true freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who went off in his debut game. After a shaky start where he dropped a pass, Smith caught six passes for 92 yards and scored twice. The Buckeyes’ offense wasn’t flawless, but they absolutely rolled over Akron with a score of 52-6, showcasing a wealth of talent alongside Smith.
Texas showed promise under quarterback Quinn Ewers, who threw for three touchdowns, leading the Longhorns to a solid win over Colorado State. Fellow quarterback Arch Manning also got into action, showcasing the strength of Texas’ QB lineup as they gear up for a visit to Michigan next weekend.
In other action, Alabama dominated Western Kentucky, leading 42-0 at halftime. Jalen Milroe threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns in just one half, setting a tone for the Crimson Tide’s ambitious season. They held WKU to a mere 103 passing yards.
Notre Dame’s defense also stood tall in their 23-13 victory over Texas A&M, forcing two interceptions and stopping critical fourth-down attempts.
The season may just be beginning, but the performances in Week 1 set the stage for an exciting college football year ahead.
