Charlotte is on the verge of welcoming its first Wegmans grocery store, with plans to open in the Ballantyne area. The Rochester, New York-based grocery chain aims to start construction in early 2025, marking a significant step forward for the company as it expands its reach in North Carolina.
The project is being led by Wegmans, a family-owned grocer known for its high-quality produce, seafood, and baked goods. Dan Aken, Wegmans’ vice president of real estate, has confirmed that the company has secured essential permits for the project, allowing them to begin work on the site.
Wegmans has obtained the necessary land disturbance and site work permits, which will enable the demolition of four existing buildings. Aken noted, “For a project of this magnitude, it’s actually gone quite smoothly.” This early phase is critical for paving the way to installing essential utilities and infrastructure, such as retaining walls.
The new store will occupy roughly 110,000 square feet along North Community House Road, situated on the east side of Ballantyne. Wegmans plans to finalize its purchase of approximately 14 acres from Northwood Investors later this year. The grocery store is part of Northwood’s extensive $1 billion-plus Ballantyne Reimagined project.
Assuming everything goes as planned, Wegmans anticipates submitting building permits by the second quarter of 2025. Once construction begins, it will typically take about a year to complete the building. Thus, the store is on track to open in the third quarter of 2026.
The arrival of Wegmans is much anticipated among Charlotte residents, particularly those new to the area, who often travel to the nearest Wegmans in the Raleigh market. Aken highlighted that there is significant enthusiasm for the brand in Charlotte, given that many customers are eager to access Wegmans’ well-loved products, including made-in-house subs and baked goods.
The Ballantyne Wegmans will boast an extensive array of offerings. Customers can look forward to a large selection of goods, including fresh produce, seafood, meats, baked items, deli choices, and a comprehensive selection of wines and beers. Additionally, the store will feature a market café with indoor and outdoor seating, allowing customers to savor Wegmans’ restaurant-quality food.
Moreover, a sub shop, various hot bars featuring Asian cuisine, wings, chicken tenders, pizza, and sushi made on-site will be available. The store will also provide online shopping capabilities, catering services, a floral shop, coffee options, and family packs.
Aken shared that Wegmans continues to explore the Charlotte market for a potential second location, focusing on middle and northern areas of the city. The demographics of these regions align well with Wegmans’ target market, including household income levels and a passion for food, reflected in the burgeoning restaurant scene.
In summary, Charlotte is set to gain a vibrant shopping destination with the opening of Wegmans in Ballantyne. The store is expected to cater to a growing appetite for high-quality grocery options in the area, ultimately becoming a vital part of the community.
