Weslaco, Texas – The head football coach of Donna High School, Michael Anthony Gonzales, has resigned following his recent arrest for allegedly choking his girlfriend in a parking lot. The incident, which occurred early on September 16, has led to significant fallout within the local community.
According to police records, an officer on patrol around 3 a.m. encountered Gonzales and a woman outside a Dollar Tree store. They were reportedly arguing over questionable texts that the woman found on his phone. The situation escalated, and police stated Gonzales became violent, pushing her, slamming her head into a car door, and striking her multiple times. It was also reported that he strangled her several times during the altercation.
Officers described Gonzales as “highly intoxicated,” noting that he had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. His girlfriend, who has been in a relationship with him for seven years, provided details of the event, leading to Gonzales being booked on charges of assaulting a family member and impeding breathing.
Following his arrest, Gonzales submitted his resignation to the Donna Independent School District, which was promptly accepted. A district spokesperson stated, “District policy prohibits us from releasing specific details regarding the individual involved. However, we can confirm that Mr. Gonzales tendered his resignation and it was promptly accepted.”
This incident has raised concerns within the community about the safety and conduct of educators and coaches, emphasizing the need for accountability and support for those affected by domestic violence.
Donna is located approximately 250 miles south of San Antonio, and the community is currently grappling with the aftermath of this event as they move forward.
