Twin Falls High School Sports: Important Updates for Winter Events

As winter sports ramp up in Twin Falls, fans and participants are reminded to consider a couple of key factors when heading to high school basketball games. First and foremost is the ongoing officials’ shortage that Idaho will be facing during the 2024-2025 season. It has become quite apparent that many referees are new to the game and still getting a handle on the rules. This means that their jobs can be more difficult if fans don’t remain supportive.

Randy Winn, the District IV Basketball Commissioner, emphasizes the importance of being respectful to officials during games. “In every sport; volleyball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, softball, everybody’s short officials,” he explained. “Why sit in the stands and run referees off so your kids are not able to play high school sports? This isn’t the NBA or Division I college basketball where people are in line to go officiate these events. We’re begging people to be there, so please be good sports.”

In addition to the concerns regarding officials, some rule changes are set to take effect this season, and fans should be aware of them. One of the major changes is that if games utilize a shot clock, there will no longer be a five-second closely guarded dribbling violation. Fans should pay attention to this new regulation to better understand the game’s flow.

Another notable update involves a new flop warning. Players trying to exaggerate contact for a foul without any actual contact will receive a warning. Knowing these adjustments will enhance everyone’s understanding of the game.

As the winter sports season kicks off, it’s crucial for everyone involved to take these key points into account. By respecting officials and understanding the new rules, fans can help create a positive environment for both players and referees.
