Winthrop Ends April With Re-Match Vs. Charlotte Tuesday Afternoon – Winthrop University Athletics
Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop University baseball team is gearing up for a re-match against the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday afternoon.
Charlotte Visit Winthrop
After a tough weekend series at UNC Asheville where Winthrop dropped all three games, the team will be looking to bounce back as they face off against Charlotte. The match-up is set to take place at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.
Series History
Winthrop and Charlotte have a long-standing history, having met for the 46th time. Charlotte currently leads the series with a record of 25-19-1. The last encounter between the two teams saw the 49ers clinching an 11-8 victory on March 12. However, the Eagles have a strong track record, winning 11 of the first 20 contests from 1980-2005.
Winthrop’s Performance
Despite the recent losses, Winthrop sits as the leader in overall wins in league history since the Big South was elevated to NCAA Division I status in 1986. The team has shown strength in pitching, ranking 4th in the Big South with an ERA of 6.45. Pitcher Riley Huge has been a standout performer, leading the Big South in batters struck out with 91 and is fifth in the nation in strikeouts.

Riley Huge has been a consistent performer for Winthrop, earning Big South Starting Pitcher of The Week multiple times. His exceptional performances have also garnered national recognition, with Huge winning three national honors including being named National Pitcher of the Week by the NCBWA.

After the match against Charlotte, Winthrop will have a break for final exams before returning to the field on May 1 against Wofford at 5:30 p.m.
