Winthrop nearly came all the way back from a 10-run deficit in the ninth inning but would fall to USC Upstate in the second game of a three-game home series with the Spartans on Saturday night by a final score of 13-10. Winthrop moves to 12-16-1 overall and 4-4 in the Big South.
Grant Sherrod homered to right field on the third play of the game to put the visiting Spartans ahead 1-0. Winthrop loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning but couldn’t capitalize. Upstate extended their lead in the following innings, with Troy Hamilton hitting a home run in the third and the Spartans scoring four more runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead.
Despite the deficit, Winthrop fought back, scoring runs in the sixth and seventh innings. In a dramatic ninth inning, the Eagles mounted a comeback with Alan Benhardt and Cole Griffith driving in runs. Harrison Wilson then hit a grand slam to cut the deficit to three at 13-10.
Winthrop plays the Spartans tomorrow afternoon in the series finale at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
