Rock Hill, S.C. – In a thrilling doubleheader at home, the Winthrop Eagles split wins with Toledo on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles faced off against Toledo, resulting in a 2-1 loss in seven innings followed by a strong 7-2 victory in nine innings. With this split, Winthrop’s baseball team now stands at 2-5 overall for the season.
Reese Lumpkin put up an impressive performance with 5.2 innings pitched, allowing only 5 hits and striking out 6 batters. Grant Umberger claimed the win for Toledo, while Camryn Szynski secured his 2nd save of the season.
Winthrop took an early lead in the first game when Abe Affholter scored on an error by the centerfielder in the third inning. Toledo responded by tying the game in the fourth and then taking the lead with a home run in the fifth. The score remained 2-1 in Toledo’s favor until the end of the game.
Charlie Evans led the Eagles in the second game, going 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Nate Chronis, Alan Benhardt, and Cole Griffith also made significant contributions to Winthrop’s win. Owen Sarna pitched a solid 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits and 1 run.
In the second game, both teams had opportunities to score early on, with Winthrop finally breaking through in the third inning. Toledo managed to stay in the game, but Winthrop’s offense exploded in the later innings, securing a comfortable 7-2 victory.
Winthrop will face Toledo once again in the series finale tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles will look to build on their strong performance and clinch the series win at home.
