Winthrop University’s baseball team emerged victorious in the series finale against Longwood, claiming a 9-5 win on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles secured the season series from the Lancers and clinched their first Big South series win of the year. With this triumph, Winthrop’s overall record moves to 8-10, with a 2-1 record in Big South play.

Winthrop threatened to score early in the game but finally broke the deadlock by posting five runs in the third inning. The explosive inning included back-to-back doubles by Chancellor Jennings and Cole Griffith. Longwood fought back with three runs in the fourth, but Winthrop continued to extend their lead with four runs in the sixth, highlighted by Jaylen Hernandez’s two-run double.
The Lancers managed to reduce the gap to four runs with two runs in the seventh, but Winthrop’s defense held strong to secure the victory.
Winthrop will now face Clemson on Tuesday, Mar. 19, in their only scheduled matchup for the season. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. on ACCNX.
