Winthrop swept a doubleheader from the Charleston Southern Buccaneers Thursday afternoon in a thrilling match-up that ended with a walk-off win for the Eagles. The first game concluded with a score of 3-2, while the second game ended 4-3 in favor of Winthrop.
In the first game, Jaylen Hernandez’s performance stood out as he went 1-3 with 2 runs, 1 RBI, and a home run. Pitcher Connor Harris secured the win, and Parker Kruglewicz notched the save.
The Eagles struck first in the second inning, taking a lead that they held until the sixth when Charleston Southern briefly went ahead. Winthrop quickly answered back and secured the victory.
Harrison Wilson and Chancellor Jennings made significant contributions in the second game, with Wilson hitting a crucial RBI double and Jennings scoring a run.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Winthrop ultimately clinching the win in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
With these victories, the Eagles move to 19-28-1 overall and 8-14 in Big South play. Winthrop will play their final game of the season tomorrow afternoon, where 10 seniors will be honored on Senior Day prior to their last home game of the year.
