The Winthrop University Eagles men’s basketball team is gearing up for a highly-anticipated game against UNC Asheville, to be played on Thursday night, in a match set to be nationally-televised on ESPNU.
The Eagles, with an impressive record of 13-6 and 4-0 Big South, are riding a five-game winning streak leading up to this crucial matchup against UNC Asheville. UNC Asheville, on the other hand, currently stands at 11-8 and 3-1 Big South. The encounter marks the 87th meeting between the two teams, with the Eagles leading the all-time series 48-38.
The game takes place at the Winthrop Coliseum, Rock Hill, S.C, and slated to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. It will be televised live on ESPNU, featuring Matt Schick as play-by-play and Paul Biancardi as analyst. Radio coverage will be available on 94.3 FM, ESPN730, and WGNC AM1450. Live stats will be served by Statbroadcast.
Senior guard Nick Johnson is leading the Eagles with a season-high of 20 points, ranking fourth in the Big South in steals per game. Johnson is followed in scoring by senior guard Kasen Harrison and Junior forward K.J. Doucet.
The Eagles have had a notable season, with an undefeated run in league play alongside High Point (3-0). They’ve demonstrated a capable offense and defense, ranking in the Top 3 for both categories in the Big South. They have also emerged as the leaders in free throw attempts per game, taking an average of 28.1 attempts.
Winthrop and Asheville’s history stretches back several decades, making them the most-played opponent in the history of the Eagles’ program. While Asheville claimed the last meeting with an 86-79 victory, the overall record favours the Eagles.
A win in the upcoming game would bring Winthrop their 200th home victory in Big South regular-season games. Moreover, the Eagles would be hunting for their ninth consecutive regular-season conference victory and a fifth regular-season home win.
Following the showdown with UNC Asheville, the Eagles will head to Boiling Springs, N.C., to face Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Jan 20, at 1 p.m.
