Boiling Springs, N.C. – Winthrop secured their first road victory of the season by defeating Gardner-Webb 3-2 in a closely contested game on Saturday afternoon. With this win, Winthrop moves to 9-12 overall and boasts a 3-2 record in conference play.
Jaylen Hernandez (1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR) and Nate Chronis (1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR) played crucial roles in securing the victory for Winthrop. Reese Lumpkin (2-3) earned the win on the mound, while Michael Ciminiello (0-3) suffered the loss for Gardner-Webb.
The game started with Gardner-Webb taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single by Humberto Torres. Winthrop responded in the second inning when Jaylen Hernandez hit a homer to tie the score at 1-1. In the fifth inning, Nate Chronis hit a two-run home run to give Winthrop the lead.
After Gardner-Webb scored a run in the sixth inning, Winthrop’s bullpen, led by Parker Whittle, shut down the Runnin’ Bulldogs to secure the victory. Chazz Grossington’s triple in the eighth inning provided a scoring opportunity for Winthrop, but the team was unable to capitalize.
