Clinton, S.C. – In a Big South showdown, the Winthrop Eagles suffered a tough loss to Presbyterian College with a final score of 20-3 on Friday night. The Eagles now stand at 13-18-1 overall and 4-6 in Big South play.
Notable performances came from Cole Griffith (1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, HR) for Winthrop and Daniel Eagan (4-0) for Presbyterian. The losing pitcher for Winthrop was Riley Huge (4-4).
In a back-and-forth game, Jake Randolph scored for Presbyterian in the second inning on an error, taking an early lead. Winthrop responded in the third with Ricky Teel’s RBI single, but Presbyterian broke the tie with four runs in the same inning.
Presbyterian continued to dominate, adding five runs in the fourth and eight runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 18-1. Winthrop managed to score two runs in the eighth inning with a homer from Cole Griffith, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Winthrop will have a chance to bounce back in the second game of the series against Presbyterian tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
