Losing their third straight Big South contest, Winthrop stands with a 7-10 record overall, and 1-3 in the Big South while Radford improves to 7-10, 3-0 in Big South games.
The game started off on an even keel as both teams tied at 4-4 in the early minutes of play. However, the Highlanders broke away with a 12-0 run to take a substantial lead, ending the first quarter with an 18-10 lead. In the second quarter, Winthrop fought back valiantly, ultimately ending the first half leading 32-26.
Both teams rallied hard in the third quarter. Despite multiple lead changes, Radford managed to regain control by the end of the quarter with a 49-45 lead. The culmination of the game saw Radford take a solid stance early in the fourth quarter, managing to sustain its lead, to ultimately seal their victory with a final score of 63-55.
In the face of defeat, Winthrop demonstrated several strong performances. Nyah Stallings, in particular, stood out, delivering a career-high 16 points. Leonor Paisana also made significant contributions to the game, scoring 11 points. The match has put Paisana just four three-pointers away from securing a place in the top 10 for career triples in the school’s history. Winthrop outscored Radford 33-22 in bench points and shot a respectable 42% from the field overall.
Despite this setback, the Eagles will be looking to regain their form in their upcoming games. They now prepare to take on UNC Asheville on Wednesday, January 17, hoping to turn tables in their favor. The game will be broadcasted at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
