Winthrop University’s baseball team faced a tough defeat at home against Appalachian State on Sunday, losing with a final score of 16-1. The Eagles split the two-game series with the Mountaineers, bringing their overall season record to 6-8.
Despite the loss, several players made notable contributions for Winthrop:

Appalachian State took an early lead, scoring four runs at the start of the game. They continued to extend their lead throughout the match, with notable plays including Xavier Moronta’s RBI single and two two-run home runs in the ninth inning.
Winthrop managed to get on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning with Alan Benhardt’s single to center field, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Mountaineers’ strong performance.
Next, Winthrop will face off against Charlotte on March 12 at 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
