Winthrop University Athletics team – the Eagles – are setting their sights on a rebound as they prepare to compete against Charleston Southern on the evening of Wednesday, January 24. The match, which takes place in N. Charleston, S.C., will offer the Eagles a chance to turn into victory their two-game skid. Currently, the determined team holds a 13-8, 4-2 Big South record, compared to Charleston Southern’s current standing of 6-12, 2-3 Big South record.
For those interested in supporting the Eagles in breaking their losing streak, the game can be viewed live on ESPN+ or heard over multiple radio networks including 94.3 FM, ESPN730, and WGNC AM1450/101.FM. As part of the preparations, the probable starting lineup of the Eagles has been released, featuring Nick Johnson, Kasen Harrison, K.J. Doucet, Chase Claxton, and Kelton Talford. Each player brings a record of point-per-game intensity to the game, carrying in their pockets successes from the previous leagues.
This match marks the 81st time the Eagles compete against the Buccaneers. With a winning record against Charleston Southern, the Eagles hope to extend their lead in their all-time series and continue their victorious streak. On top of this, they’ll be fighting to keep their top-ranked record in the Big South standings.
In spite of their recent poor luck, the team has shown resilience both in scoring offense and scoring defense, holding a position in the top 3 for both categories within the Big South. The team seeks to reverse its recent slump, which has seen it fall close to UNC Asheville and at Gardner-Webb, by capitalizing on its aggressive free-throw strategy, which puts them at a leading position in the nation. This season the Eagles have attempted 208 more free throws than their opponents and also broke the record for most free throws in the nation.
The Eagles bring forth an experienced team to the court, featuring well-rounded players capable of racking up impressive scores. Senior Nick Johnson, who has two 20-point games during league play, notably ranks fifth in the Big South in steals per game. On the other hand, senior Kelton Talford has been achieving 20 or more points in three straight games and currently leads the team in scoring.
Following the game against Charleston Southern, Winthrop University Athletics team will next return home on Saturday, January 27, for a game against league-leading High Point.
