Rock Hill, N.C. – After last night’s contest at Davidson was canceled due to inclement weather, Winthrop returned to the friendly confines of The Winthrop Ballpark and combined to use seven pitchers in a 5-0 shutout in a re-match with The Citadel on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, Winthrop moves to 13-17-1 overall.
Ricky Teel: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B
Nicholas Badillo: 1-4, 2 RBI, 2B
Cole Griffith: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI
W: Joey Hylinski (1-0)
L: Anthony Hausner (0-1)
S: N/A
The only runs of the game occurred in the bottom of the first inning for Winthrop. This was all the Eagles needed for the victory. Badillo doubled to right center field to score two runs. Griffith singled to center field and drove in two more runs. In his first career start, Ryan Yaroshuk ended the barrage with a double down the left field line that brought in Griffith. Winthrop would threaten again in the second and the seventh but failed to score. The only time the Bulldogs had a chance to get on the scoreboard and end the shutout bid was in the eighth. With a guy on third with two outs, a foul out ended the inning. Hylinski would get the win, his first on both the season and his career.
Winthrop steps back into conference play by heading to Clinton, S.C. for a three-game series with the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. The first game will take place on Fri., Apr. 12 at 6 p.m.
